Drawing on evidence and lessons from the Sedhiou Region in Senegal, he presented the Resilient Territories Model (SIRT–EFR–UMSA), an integrated framework designed to transform rural vulnerability into lasting resilience through coordinated planning, household-level impact interventions, and service delivery systems.
His presentation highlighted how the model contributes to strengthening food security, increasing agricultural productivity, improving household incomes, supporting climate adaptation, fostering women's empowerment, promoting youth integration, and reducing migration pressures through locally owned and evidence-driven solutions.
As discussions continue throughout E2A 2026, the conference is reinforcing the importance of African-led knowledge systems, collaborative learning, and strong partnerships in bridging the gap between evidence generation and real-world impact.
We thank Partnership for African Social Governance Research (PASGR) for convening this important continental platform and for championing evidence-informed development across Africa.

Bridging the Gaps: Tackling Food Systems Fragmentation through a ‘Mezzanine Approach’

Across Africa, food systems are vast, complex, and often fragmented. Food systems refer to the interconnected network of activities and actors involved in producing, processing, distributing, consuming, and disposing of food. Small-scale farmers operate alongside large agribusinesses, informal markets compete with formal retail chains, and traditional practices exist next to rapidly evolving digital tools. This fragmentation creates major challenges: smallholder farmers and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are excluded from high-value markets, food safety enforcement is inconsistent, and innovations often struggle to reach broader implementation

FSTS and McGill Experts' in Senegal

We had the honor of being received by Mabouba Diagne, Deputy Minister of Agriculture of Senegal, alongside the Food Systems Transformation Solutions and McGill University expert teams.

This meeting took place within the framework of the FS4A Project, providing an important opportunity to exchange on strategies to strengthen sustainable agricultural systems and support innovation in the sector.

We are grateful for the constructive discussions and the strong commitment to advancing resilient and inclusive food systems in Senegal.

FSTS in partnership with the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF), and funded by the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) is pleased to announce the launch of its capacity-building project for the empowerment of women and youth in the agricultural sector called Butamb.

The project will be implemented by ACT Afrique Gabon and Ellipsis and aims to strengthen the capacities of women and youth in the agricultural sector, with a particular focus on agricultural cooperatives and associations and will take place from October 2024 to May 2025.

Covering three countries (Burkina Faso, Gabon, and Sierra Leone), this project aims to strengthen the development and resilience of agricultural value chains for inclusive growth and sustainable development.
